Child Fitness is Family Fitness

Everyone here at Baby Goes Pro knows the importance of active children, but we also acknowledge that it’s a great opportunity to get the whole family active as well.  When parents are participating and engaging their toddlers, they are in turn observing fitness as well.  Here are some good activities to do with the young ones so both sides enjoy the benefits of exercise!

  • If your children are a little bit older, they can play in fun areas such as inflatable bounce houses or trampolines (with appropriate supervision).  Adults can have fun bouncing around as well with their children!
  • Running around while playing soccer, basketball, or football can be a great cardio activity.
  • For the younger ones, crawling with them and playing hide-and-seek can actually be a big calorie-burner for the adult participants.

You’ll find your own games and activities over time that require more physical strain than just peek-a-boo!  Our Baby Goes Pro DVDs will instill the interest in sports your baby will cherish so you can play sports with them as they get older.

Learning More About Let’s Move

If you’re unfamiliar with the “Let’s Move” program initiative created by First Lady Michelle Obama, it is targeted towards our overweight and obese youth.  The purpose of it is to educate youth in healthier eating habits, as well as how to stay active by participating in more physical activities.  Here are some startling facts about the youth of the United States over the past three decades:

  • Childhood obesity rates have tripled
  • Currently, one in three children in America are overweight or obese
  • It is projected that one third of children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes at one point in their life

Let’s Move notes some of the key reasons that children these days are afflicted by these problems:

  • Gym classes and after-school sports have been cut in many school districts
  • Portion sizes have increased dramatically
  • The amount of sugar in beverages has increased
  • Advancements in entertainment media replace much of physical activity

Though these are some troubling facts, Let’s Move is making headway in giving parents the information they need in providing healthy solutions for their children.

Baby Goes Pro supports anything that gives kids a chance to combat the premature onset of obesity.  Baby Goes Pro DVDs are a great way for babies and toddlers to enjoy the benefits of physical activity early on!

Summer Activities

With Summer approaching and the warm weather among us, your toddler wants to play outside! Here are some fun in the sun activities that your toddler will LOVE:

1. Backyard Obstacle Course – create an obstacle course in your backyard of some of your child’s favorite activities and make it a race! You can include hopscotch, jumping jacks, etc. This game is exciting for kids because the activities change so quickly.

2. Water Bucket Relay – fill a bucket up with water and place it on one line. Then about 10 feet away, place on the ground a large empty cup. Use a 1/4 measuring cup and have the child carry water in the measuring cup to the large empty cup. When the cup is overflowing, the game is over. With multiple kids, this can be a relay race. Water Bucket Relay is great for the hotter days of the Summer!

3. Duck, Duck, Goose – this oldie but goodie is always fun for the little ones. Have the children sit in a circle, with one starting out as “it.” That child will walk around the circle lightly tapping the other kids heads saying “Duck” or “Goose.” The child who gets called “Goose” will hurry behind “it” to try and tag him/her before sitting down. If the child does tag the person who was “it” then he/she is “it” again. If the child is able to sit in the “Goose’s” seat before being tagged, then “Goose” is now considered “it” and will walk around the circle.

Try out these games and let us know what you think! If you have any game suggestions, please feel free to comment. I’m sure our readers would LOVE to hear more ideas.

Avoiding Sedentary Activities Early On

In recent days, the amount of technology we have available indoors is pretty overwhelming.  Between the new trend of 3-D televisions and gaming consoles that require your physical participation, some people are convincing themselves that there isn’t even a reason to leave the house anymore.  Well, perhaps just for work.   Though some consoles do attempt to emulate the motions of real motions of sports and dance, there is no real substitute for being active outdoors.

Indoor activities, such as playing video games and watching movies, should be enjoyed in moderation. With Summer quickly approaching, there are going to be rainy days that hamper the ability to play games outside, but toddlers should take advantage of the sunny ones.  It is important early on to get kids interested with what sports have to offer, and often times, they are more fulfilling and beneficial to development over the long run.  This will hopefully encourage them to choose active lifestyles when they are younger and minimize the amount of time they’d like to spend sitting inside in one place.

Extreme Parenting? Not as Extreme as You’d Think

According to a new report on ABC, the central concern of pushing young children to acquaint themselves with sports is if it’s “too much, too soon”. The video can be viewed here.  At Baby Goes Pro, we understand this is an ongoing discussion: Should we be pushing our babies and toddlers into physical activity at such a young age?  Even if our product is Baby Goes Pro, we are not advocating intense, rigorous and unhealthy training for our infants. We are facilitating the familiarization of different sports.  When they are comfortable with the basics, this will garner interest in them early on so when they are ready, they will have a refined understanding of which activities they would like to participate in.  In addition, they will have some notion of the mechanics of the sport, resulting in an edge when they begin to practice.

A great point from the video was from Glenn Lines, with his miraculous daughter Mia.  He says “A lot of people let their kids play six hours of Playstation, eating junk food, drinking cans and cans of soda..” The point is, motivating children, even at a young age, to play sports plants the seed for something special they can eventually reap the benefits of.

Our Baby Goes Pro DVDs are an excellent introductory resource for babies and toddlers to the wonderful, active world of sports. Learn how to get your kids moving today!

Safe and Healthy Exercise With Your Kids

We may know our kids’ favorite outdoor activities, but we have some tips to ensure these ventures outside the house go smoothly. Taking the proper precautions will prevent your little ones from unpleasant injuries and body stress.

  • The most common misfortunes for young children occurs when they don’t wear protective gear. Depending on how rigorous the activity it, your child might have to wear a helmet, shin guards, elbow guards, knee pads, goggles, and so on. It is important to assess the intensity of the activity and determine what protection is the most appropriate.
  • As well as protective gear being important, wearing the best clothing for the weather and activity is essential. During the winter seasons, wearing layers of clothes should be able to retain body temperature and ward off the cold. During the summer seasons, light-colored clothing is suggested with a material that is light for the heat. Be mindful of what shoes your kids are wearing while performing in sports. Cleats, while play sports such as soccer, are necessary to maintain stability on the field.
  • During the course of activity, it is imperative that children stay hydrated. That means they should be having at least a glass of water every 20 minutes, and a suggested glass 15 minutes prior to beginning. The complications from dehydration are troublesome, such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke.
  • Don’t forget to stretch before every activity and cool down afterward! Children can still pull and strain muscles if they don’t stretch like adults can.

These tips should aid in successful participation of outdoor activities. Our Baby Goes Pro DVD can also assist in your children properly learning the technical skills for tennis, soccer, basketball, and soccer, and more!

Fun Activities to do With Your Kids

Every weekend is a great opportunity to dedicate time with your kids to do something new and exciting outside of the house. We have some awesome suggestions on how to spend an active and fun Saturday
and Sunday outdoors.

Volunteering in the beautification of your community can be very rewarding for developing their green thumb and understanding the concept of philanthropy. There are plenty of ways for youngsters to contribute to their community. For instance, many towns have gardening clubs that spruce up public spaces. Toddlers can mess around in the dirt or pull up weeds (with supervision), and older kids can plant seeds and bulbs. Give your child her own patch of garden or pot of soil, and have them work with the plant of their choice. Invest in small but sturdy gardening tools, and let your child dig a hole and plant the seeds. Teach them to water her plant regularly and in proper amounts.

In the spirit of a more adventurous activity, plan a treasure hunt. On your own, plant little dime-store jewels and treasures in the garden. Then draw up a map with directions. (For an ancient look, let some coffee soak into the map to brown it with age; while the paper is wet, rip it around the edges). You can hide the map around the outside of the house while you’re walking around or doing something in the backyard.

A trip to a berry farm, an apple orchard, or a pumpkin patch teaches kids that produce doesn’t come from the supermarket. Ripened blueberries and raspberries are edible right off the branch. Be careful picking blackberries, which often grow on thorny stems. If your child likes to eat apples off the tree, make sure they’re organically grown. When you get home, make a pie, a cake, or jam to show how nature’s bounty can be put to good use.

Help your child turn nature’s debris into a fun hobby. Young kids can gather acorns, pinecones, and colorful autumn leaves. Older children can look for deer antlers, snake-skin sheddings, and bird feathers. At the beach, scour for pretty rocks, bleached-out sand dollars, and shells. Store items in a shoe box or a plastic display case, or showcase them in craft projects. Glue seashells onto a wooden frame, for instance, or seal fall leaves between sheets of wax paper using an iron.

This is just a start of the many fun activities that you can do with your kids to help keep them active. An active child is a happy & healthy child. Don’t forget, if any of these outdoor activities are not with in your means, you can always pop in a Discover Sports, Baby Goes Pro DVD and watch as your kids learn technical skills for tennis, soccer, basketball, and soccer!
